Gus is an older tomcat who lives at the theatre's stage door.
He is a shaggy grey, bron and black cat.
He's real name is Asparagus but since that is hard to pronounce
everyone just calls him Gus. When he was younger he was a "famous"
acting cat, but now he is old, thin and shabby, and he has palsy,
witch makes it hard for him to stay in the theatre.
When he was younger and still active he worked with great actors
like Irving and Tree, and even understudied Dick Whittingtons cat,
but his most famous part was when he played FireFrorefiddle, the
fiend of the Fell.
Gus had all the qualities that was of need for a great actor, a
perfect memory, a voice that could soften hearts, he could act
with both his back and his tail, make blood-curdling noises, walk
on a wir, swing on bells, rescue children. He could extemporise
back-chat, gag, let the cat out of the bag, and prepare for a
performance in only one hour. He even knew seven speeches by
heart.
Gus seems to be upset by the fact that the theatre isn't the same
as when he was young, he says that the kittens that act now are
not trained well and that they think they are smart
when all they can do is jump through hoops.
In most casts Gus dances and sings with the other cats then
changes costume for his number. But in the video version it's
John Mills who plays Gus and since he couldn't do all the dancing
(he's 90 years old) another actor is playing him trough the rest
of the show, and is credited as Asparagus.
